Description
Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a critical protection concern in Somaliland, exacerbated by displacement, poverty, harmful social norms, and limited access to protection services. Women, girls, children, and other vulnerable groups are often exposed to physical, emotional, and psychological harm, with long-lasting impacts on their wellbeing and social participation.
Through our Protection & Psychosocial Support (GBV) programme, we deliver integrated, survivor-centred interventions that prioritise safety, dignity, confidentiality, and empowerment. Our approach combines immediate protection responses with long-term psychosocial recovery and community-based prevention.
Psychosocial Support Services
We provide psychosocial support to survivors of GBV and individuals affected by trauma through counselling, group therapy, and community-based support activities. These services help survivors cope with distress, rebuild self-esteem, and restore emotional wellbeing in a safe and supportive environment.
Case Management & Referral
Our trained protection staff deliver individual case management, ensuring survivors receive timely, confidential, and appropriate support. We coordinate referrals to health, legal, shelter, and livelihood services through established referral pathways in line with national and international protection standards.
GBV Prevention & Community Awareness
We work with community leaders, women’s groups, youth, and men to raise awareness of GBV risks, rights, and prevention strategies. Through dialogue sessions, campaigns, and training, we challenge harmful norms, promote positive behaviour change, and strengthen community responsibility for protection.
Child Protection & Safeguarding
We implement child protection interventions for children exposed to violence, neglect, exploitation, or abuse. Our work includes psychosocial care, family-based support, safe referrals, and community monitoring mechanisms to ensure children’s safety and wellbeing.
Safe Spaces for Women & Girls
We support the establishment of safe spaces where women and girls can access psychosocial support, life skills, information, and peer networks. These spaces provide a protective environment that fosters healing, empowerment, and social inclusion.
Capacity Building & Systems Strengthening
We strengthen local protection systems by training community volunteers, service providers, and institutions on GBV prevention, psychosocial care, safeguarding, and referral mechanisms. This ensures sustainable, locally owned protection responses aligned with Somaliland frameworks.
