Description

Access to clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene is fundamental to health, dignity, and human development. In Somaliland, recurring droughts, displacement, and weak infrastructure continue to limit access to these essential services, particularly for rural communities, internally displaced persons (IDPs), women, and children.

Through our Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) programme, we work to reduce waterborne diseases, improve public health outcomes, and enhance community resilience. Our approach combines emergency response with long-term, sustainable solutions that are locally owned and environmentally appropriate.

Water Supply Interventions

We support the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of safe water sources, including boreholes, shallow wells, water harvesting systems, and water distribution points. These interventions aim to reduce long walking distances for water, improve water quality, and ensure reliable access for households, schools, and health facilities.

Sanitation Infrastructure

We promote improved sanitation through the construction and rehabilitation of latrines and sanitation facilities in communities, schools, and public spaces. Our work focuses on reducing open defecation, improving privacy and safety—especially for women and girls—and strengthening community ownership of sanitation facilities.

Hygiene Promotion & Behaviour Change

Hygiene education is central to our WASH approach. We conduct community-based hygiene promotion activities that encourage handwashing, safe water handling, menstrual hygiene management, and improved household sanitation practices. These activities are delivered through trained community volunteers, schools, and local institutions to ensure lasting behaviour change.

Emergency WASH Response

In times of drought, displacement, or public health emergencies, we deliver rapid WASH responses, including emergency water trucking, hygiene kits, and temporary sanitation facilities. These interventions are designed to reduce immediate health risks while laying the groundwork for longer-term recovery.

Community Engagement & Sustainability

We work closely with community WASH committees to ensure local participation, accountability, and sustainability. By building local capacity in water management, operation, and maintenance, we help communities take long-term ownership of WASH services and reduce dependency on external support.
